Bursitis


 

What is Bursitis?

Bursitis is the inflammation or irritation of the bursa sac.  These bursa sacs are cushions filled with fluid to help the tendons, muscles and bones from rubbing that could results in inflammation. There are 160 Bursa located through out the body and some are located hip, elbow, shoulder and knee.  The knee itself has typically 11 bursa around the knee joint.  Once these become inflamed the pain can be very painful.  Diagnosis is by physical exam and some lab work may be ordered.

What is Greater Trochanteric Bursitis?

Greater Trochanteric Bursitis of the hip is the inflammation of the Trochanteric bursa that is located on the outside of the hip located of the greater trochanter.  This can also be pain caused from tears of the gluteus maximus, gluteus medius, and tensor fascia latae.  Tears are from chronic inflammation, receptive movements or overuse.  The pain can cause pain in the lower back, into the outside of the leg resulting in a change in the way you walk and into the ankle.  It can feel similar to a back injury and at times can be confused with back and be missed on exam.  Diagnosis is by physical exam and MRI of the pelvis or hip. 

What are the treatments for Greater Trochanteric Bursitis?

Treatment for Greater Trochanteric Bursitis can consist of physical therapy, medication, epidural steroid injection,  MLS laser, or surgery.

What is elbow (olecranon) bursitis?

Elbow (Olecranon) Bursitis is when the bursa over the elbow becomes inflamed.  The fluid filled sac becomes inflamed and can result in a golf ball sized lump at the tip of the elbow.  This can occur after an injury, placing pressure on your elbow (sitting in a car and resting elbow on the console), or receptive use.

Diagnosis is by physical exam, x-rays and MRI of elbow.  

What are the treatments for elbow bursitis?

Treatment for elbow bursitis can consist of physical therapy, medication, epidural steroid injection,  MLS laser, or surgery.

What is shoulder bursitis and Impingement Syndrome?

Shoulder Bursitis pain and Impingement Syndrome.  Both are to describe the inflammation of the bursa and the rotator cuff tendons within the shoulder joint.  Common complaints of shoulder bursitis and Impingement syndrome are pain with overhead activities, pain while lying on side while sleeping, pain over the shoulder and upper arm.  

Diagnosis is by physical exam, x-rays and MRI of shoulder bursitis and impingement syndrome.  

What is the treatment for shoulder bursitis and impingement syndrome?

Treatment for shoulder bursitis and impingement syndrome can consist of physical therapy, medication, epidural steroid injection, MLS laser, or surgery.

What is Knee bursitis?

Knee bursitis is inflammation of bursa of the knee joint.  The bursa reduces the friction and provides cushion between your bones, tendons, muscles and skin.  There are eleven different bursa located in the knee.  When you have knee bursitis you can have localized inflammation that can swell and cause pain, decrease range of motion, warmth or redness.  Patella bursitis is also known as Housemaid’s knee because of injury caused by repeated kneeling or other trauma or disease to the knee. Inflammation to the pes anserine bursa, located on the inside of the knee.

What are the symptoms of knee bursitis or knee pain?

Symptoms are knee tenderness or pain and swelling may or may not be present.

How do you diagnosis knee bursitis?

Diagnosis is by physical exam, x-rays and MRI of knee pain and bursitis
