Upper back pain or thoracic pain


 

Upper back pain or thoracic pain occurs between the base of the neck and to the bottom of the rib cage.  Middle back pain is most commonly caused by muscle spasms or myofascial pain.  Poor posture over time or strain to your back after lifting, new exercise, prolong sitting or sleeping wrong can also be causes of upper back pain. Herniated disc can occur causing nerve pain.  Symptoms may include limited range of motion, muscle pain, joint pain, pain radiating around ribs, pins and needles, numbness. Diagnosis with x-ray or MRI scan, further testing may be needed based off exam.


Treatments can consist of rest, ice and or heat, medication such at over the counter nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), physical therapy, chiropractic manipulation, medical procedure such as Facet joint injection, Epidural steroid injections (ESI) or require spinal surgery.
