Percutaneous refers to a minimally invasive method of surgery in which a needle is inserted through the skin or a small incision is made.

This type of surgical procedure may be beneficial for patients who otherwise would undergo traditional back surgery. Similar to other minimally invasive procedures, percutaneous surgical procedure achieves its main surgical goal but with relatively minor disruption of muscle and surrounding tissue when placing instrumentation.
